Product family development sprint

Folded Pause System

A family of transitional furniture objects designed for short pauses in semi-public environments.

Folded Pause System explores how one continuous folded-loop language can adapt to different moments of temporary rest: changing shoes at home, rearranging stools for informal conversation, or pausing briefly in a transit corridor.

Scope

Three related seating typologies developed through one family language

Focus

Short-duration rest, transitional rituals, and low-noise spatial behavior

Methods

Industrial design, CAD development, product-family thinking, and contextual visualization

Overview

One folded form language, translated across three different pause conditions.

Folded Pause System tests whether one continuous loop-like profile can remain recognizable while moving from a domestic threshold to workplace conversation and public transit. The family shifts in scale, material expression, and permanence while preserving rounded geometry, open structure, and a deliberately quiet presence.

Family members

Three pause objects, three contexts.

01

Threshold Chair

Home entryway pause for changing shoes, setting down a bag, and slowing down at the threshold.

02

Meeting Pause Stool

Flexible short-duration seating for critiques, workshops, and informal conversation.

03

Transit Pause Bench

Wall-aligned public rest that keeps circulation and cleaning paths open.

Family development

Three CAD-developed objects, one shared structural language.

The family was modeled as three separate full-scale concepts rather than as a styling exercise. The comparative study records how the same folded-loop idea changes envelope, proportion, and support logic across domestic, workplace, and public contexts.

Threshold Chair≈ 639 × 434 × 380 mm
Meeting Pause Stool≈ 449 × 435 × 350 mm
Transit Pause Bench≈ 2310 × 260 × 338 mm

Three contexts

The same family language changes with the kind of pause.

01 — Home entryway

Threshold Chair

A compact perch for the small pause between outside and home. The continuous U-shaped body supports changing shoes, setting down a bag, or briefly gathering oneself without turning the threshold into another storage system.

02 — Workplace conversation

Meeting Pause Stool

A lightweight stool for temporary gathering rather than permanent workstation occupation. The tapered hollow shell can move easily between critiques, workshops, and informal conversations, then nest against a wall when the room changes use.

Material direction
Light grey glass-filled polymer
Role
Short-duration, stackable seating

03 — Public transit

Transit Pause Bench

A wall-mounted seating line for brief public rest. Repeated folded modules keep the floor clear for circulation and maintenance while translating the family language into a thinner, longer, more infrastructural object.

Material direction
Brushed stainless steel / powder-coated aluminum
Role
Wall-aligned brief public rest

Family logic

From domestic threshold to public corridor, the family stays calm by reducing visual noise.

The system treats pause as a design condition rather than a single product type. Across all three concepts, a restrained folded structure adapts to different behaviors while keeping the family visually legible and materially quiet.
